- While today Republicians are more likely than Democrats to support the
RKBA, it wasn't always so. The law that took away the right of the citizens
of California to bear arms was introduced in 1967 by Republican assemblyman
Donald Mulford - and approved by Governor Ronald Reagan - to oppose the Black Panther
Party of Self-Defense, whose "What we
Believe" reads: "The Second Amendment of the Constitution of the United
States gives us a right to bear arms. We therefore believe that all black
people should arm themselves for self defense." I think that's still good advice today, given rising
concerns about police brutality.
